Flip Chart
For this song, I created a flip chart using the awesome images that the artist made and words along side it. Unfortunately, I can't claim those images, so if you have purchased the extra $3 images that go along with the song, just email me a copy of your receipt and I will send the flip chart to you. I don't want her to miss out on the money she would earn for her hard work. My email is virginiarichins@gmail.com. I did also make one that has just the words with the characters in color, for when we review lots of songs together. It makes it easier so I am not flipping a ton of pages. I just really like the words large enough that they can see from the back of the room. As a tip, if you are viewing this from your phone, click the three dots in the upper left hand corner and select "print layout" for easier viewing. You can access that file here:
Hand motions
Do you ever have one of those moments where you feel truly inspired? I had that moment with this song. I was a bit intimidated by this song at first because there are SO many characters mentioned and at the end of the song it is just their name and one descriptive word for them. I almost didn't do it at all, but the more I listened to it, the more I loved the song. I felt like if I could come up with some actions that would help the name and the story stick, it could really help my Primary kiddos. So I went to work and looked up ASL signs and used just hand motions if I thought those would fit best. For most of these characters, there aren't any actual ASL signs for their name. That is because in the Deaf community you are given a name by another person who is Deaf. Anyway, I was able to find a few names and used the ones I could. For those I couldn't I made up a simple ASL sign for them to try and help the kids connect to the character. When first introducing the song, we went slow and talked about the story and what each character meant. I think it is really helping the kids learn. The video above, is a long video, but I explain each of the hand motions/ASL so you can practice it a bit. I also have a video with just the ASL to help make it a little easier to practice over and over. Here is that one:
Egg Shakers
I wanted another way to review this song, so I created a way to sing it using egg shakers. They are super easy to make on your own. You just fill Easter eggs with rice (about half way), then close them up and put tape around the opening. They have held up great for our primary. You can also find them on amazon too. For this song, I tried to use purposeful movement with my egg shakers to help remind them of the words as we sing. The video has the whole song at the beginning and then breaks down what all the movements stand for and practices it a little slower. If you need extra practice, just rewind to the beginning to practice just the song with no explanations in bewtween. Hopefully it helps your primary learn the song. We are using it as a review this week.
I really need to come up with some other ways to teach this song and I imagine I will as the year goes on, but for now we are taking this song really slow and introducing the song as we learn about the characters. I will update this post once I come up with more ideas though!
