Help Me Dear Father

Updated: Mar 15, 2022

Help Me Dear Father singing time ideas! This post has a flip chart, song story idea, band-aid singing time, and even a rhythm sticks song! Check them all out and let me know if you need more ideas. I will keep updating this post as I find more fun things!

Flip Chart

First off, I love a good flip chart. I love them so much that I have started creating my own. love to print mine on card stock and three hole punch the page to flip them upwards in a 3 ring binder. I will also tape them together accordion style to place them on a board in primary so my hands are free during singing time to do fun activities. I have my husband help flip the pages during the primary program. Just click on the link below to print the file. As a tip, if you are viewing this from your phone, click the three dots in the upper left hand corner and select "print layout" for easier viewing:

I also created a flip chart with just the words so that you can use it if you are reviewing a lot of songs at once and easily flip from song to song. I like to punch holes in it and put it in a binder with the name of the song on sticky tabs so I can quickly find the song. This also allows my hands to be more free to do fun things like hand motions or instruments. You can see that chart here:

Band Aids

Camille from Camille's primary ideas had a super fun idea using band-aids. My primary kiddos loved it this week. I altered her idea a little, and we sang it through once while holding up our hands for the "freely forgive" and "truly repent" parts. Before we sang, I instructed them to put the repent sticker on the right hand and the forgive sticker on the left. Then we talked about how when we are angry, it causes wounds or "owies" in our relationships. But forgiveness is like putting a band-aid on your owie. It helps it to heal. There may still be a scar because you may still remember what happened, but it no longer causes you pain. We talked about how this relates to sin and repentance too. Then the next time we sang it through, we added in the ASL sign for help. So we did it every time we said help, and also still raised the sticker hands. Then we did it one more time but raised our hand every time we said me and talked about how we have to be willing to forgive and repent. It says "Help me" a lot so the kids loved this part. It also caused them to really pay attention to the words. Sometimes passing out things takes a minute or two, so I always like to have my pianist play through the song while we are getting our supplies so the melody gets in our heads. Here is Camille's post so you can see the full idea. Her printable is available through her resource page: https://camillesprimaryideas.com/2020/05/help-me-dear-father.html

Song Story

There are so many fun activities you can do with this song. For today, I will just share what I am doing this week. I got the idea from Sharla Dance's page. If you haven't checked her out yet, you totally need to! She has a ton of great ideas for teaching this song. You can check them all out here: http://teachingprimarymusic.com/help-me-dear-father-ideas-to-teach-the-song/?fbclid=IwAR3FIb62k0ZziBlQeoQnfwDSXDRV2mFIgIYgYi5WBrHRute_BgNJfftYNYA

Anyway, she does these "Song Stories." The idea is that you tell part of the story, then sing part of the song, and continue until you reach the end of the song.

She had a great version of this song, and I kind of ran with her idea! I took pictures off the church website to go along with the stories of Joseph and then added the second verse too. Here is the file for that one. As a tip, if you are viewing this from your phone, click the three dots in the upper left hand corner and select "print layout" for easier viewing:

This is what it looks like after you cut out the first verse. I just cut the images out, and then glued the script on the back. You can see the script on the back here:

As a side note, there was a sing error on #2, I have since adjusted the document to the right words of the verse. I guess that's what happens when you make primary stuff while kiddos are sleeping ;) Below is what the second verse looks like:

And below is the back of this verse:

I am excited to see how this one turns out. I think the kids are really going to love it.

Rhythm Sticks

I created a fun video using rhythm sticks to go along with this song. I may introduce it right after the song story this week, but if not, it will be fun for next week! If you don't have rhythm sticks you can make your own. I bought unpainted 12" long dowels from Walmart in the craft section. Then we just painted them with acrylic paint and sealed them using a spray modge podge. They seem to be holding up well and the kids love them. You could also just use unsharpened colorful pencils if you want. Making them takes some time, so do whichever option is best for you!

I will be sure to update this post with more ideas for this song as I get them :)
