If I Were There

Updated: Dec 2, 2022

Flip Chart

I created a flip chart for the new song "If I Were There" by Monica Scott and Angie Killian. I have to say that I liked this song once I first heard it, but creating the flip chart helped me fall in love with it. It is just so beautiful and the words really are so powerful! I hope you enjoy it as much as I already have, and I haven't even started teaching it yet! You can print out my flip chart for free by accessing the link below. Sometimes I find if I am on my phone it is a little easier to view it if you change it to print layout. But it is a great one. Here is the link:

Website and Coloring Book

Angie Killian has so many great resources on her site that you can access! You can listen to the video, print your own coloring book, purchase the music and so much more! In case you need her website it is: https://www.angiekillian.com/if-i-were-there

I ended up downloading her free coloring book. I loved it so much but I wanted to save a little money on printing. So I made it 4 to a page and had it printed single sided at my local print shop. I even had them cut them into 4 so that all I had to do was assemble them and staple them together. I plan to show the kids the video of the song next week, and after we listen to it, we will pass out the crayons and coloring books and they can color them while we sing the song. Here is my file of it four to a page in case that helps those of you with larger primaries:

Hand Motions

I decided to come up with some hand motions to help lead this song. If you can't tell by now, I lead every single song with hand motions. I do it mostly to help those who need to get wiggles out to have something to do with their hands, but also because it adds another visual for the words of the song. Usually I have at least a few kids that follow my hands as we perform it too. It is adorable. Anyway, feel free to drop hand motions if it feels like too much or substitute out some that you like better. It is mostly intended as a way to help you get started and I even rewatch my videos so that I can practice them if it has been a few weeks since I used them. It helps keep them fresh in my mind. Here is the video:

Jingle Bell Sticks

I thought it might be fun to practice this song with Jingle Bells. So I made some homemade Jingle Bell sticks and had fun thinking of ways to shake them to emphasize the words and the rhythm of the song. I made a video in case you wanted to try it out too. The video has the whole song at the beginning and then I break down the different parts to make it easier to practice. I also have a little tutorial at the end that shows how to make the Jingle Bell Sticks in case you need it. Hopefully you find it helpful. Here is my video:

Scarves

We had so much fun last week doing hand motions and the Jingle Bells Sticks, that I decided this week I will do scarves and then pull the bells out again. The bells can get a little noisy so I saved them for the last 5 minutes of Junior Primary and the last half of Senior Primary. The kids loved them though! So this week it will be mostly scarves with Jingle Bells at the end.

I created a video so you can see the movements to practice if you need it. The video has the whole song at the beginning and then I break each verse down slower for you. To teach it, I basically take the song one verse at a time with the kids. I sing the first verse while doing the motions, pause to explain certain parts and what they mean, then they sing the first verse with me. Then I repeat it with the second verse but we sing the first and second verse together after they watch me. Here is that video:

I also created a file where you can post all of the movements on the board with the movement and the words to make it easier on everyone to follow you. I printed mine on normal paper because it is a longer file, but you could also print it on cardstock for more durability. You can see the image of a few of these movements in the video above, but the file has all the verses and the chorus just once. I basically magnet them to the chalkboard and do the first verse as a line, then indent the papers of the chorus, then add the last two verses as their own lines. This makes it easy for them to see the chorus without having to post it a ton of times on the board. Here is the free file to print:

Hot & Cold Nativity

Next week is our last practice for this song. I am planning to do a hot/cold style singing time. We will start with the table up front empty and sing just the first verse until we get to a character of the song. It starts with Angels and my wooden one doesn't have an angel but it does talk about the shepherds, so we will hide a shepherd around the room while one kid is outside the room. We sing louder as the kid gets closer to the object and quiter as they are further away. Once we find it, we will sing further in the song to discover another person in the nativity and hide their piece. We will just keep building and singing and hiding until all the pieces are there. This game is super fun for the kids and they don't seem to mind the repetition. You can easily just sing whichever verse you want to start on if they find it fast. Usually for the last time I try to help the hider find a really hard spot in hopes we can make it through the entire song.

Those are all the ideas I have for now, but I will share more as they come to me! Happy singing!
