This is the section where I will share fun singing time ideas or pictures I find that go along with the weekly lessons. I will update this post as new ideas come to me throughtout the year.
Peace Be Still & Miracles
This week the primary lesson has two main topics, the story of Jesus calming the storm, and the many miracles he performed. So I have decided to incorporate them into my singing time. We will start out by singing just the first verse of the miracle. I will ask the kids to count the miracles as we sing the verse. Then we will talk briefly about some of the miracles from this week's lesson, using this document below that I made. It has scriptures and images and I will ask the kids if they recognize any of the stories from the scriptures. For junior primary I may have to just tell brief parts of each story to them. For senior, I am hoping they can review most of them for me. I will share all but the picture of Jesus calming the storm. Here is that file in case you would like to use it:
After we do that, I am going to hand out egg shakers to one side of the room and rhythm sticks to the other side of the room. The side with the rhythm sticks will sing the wise man verse and chorus of "The Wise Man and the Foolish Man." We will just tap the rhythm sticks to the beat or use simple actions. Then the egg shaker side will sing the foolish man verse using egg shakers to the beat. Then I will pause, share the first part of the story about the storm that occured and how it was a little scary. We will then do the Wiseman verse together using both instruments at the same time to create a sort of storm. After that, I will have the teachers collect the instruments and do a sort of calming by making them make waterfalls with their hands as we "shhhh" and I will say "Peace Be Still." I will explain that when Christ was awoken, he calmed the storm by saying "Peace Be Still." I will explain that Christ can bring us peace amidst our storms of life and then we will sing Peace in Christ. I hope they can feel the difference of the noisy song verses the peaceful song and hope to point it out as we feel the Spirit. I did make a flip chart for "The Wise Man and the Foolish Man" in case you need it. Here it is:
Where Your Treasure Is
This week I saw a fun idea for tying in the scripture from Matthew 6:21. It was shared in the Primary Chorister's page by Denise Demille. You can see her full idea here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ldsprimarychoristers/permalink/6650045138340028
I loved the idea of sharing treasures of the gospel but I didn't really want to pay for the printable. As the week went on, I just lost track of time. So I ended up spending even more money on a paper treasure chest that I got from my local party store, but I figured I can use it over and over for a variety of things. So I put together the treasure chest and then found objects around my home to put in it as my sort of treasures to go along with songs we are already learning. Here is what I found:
Step By Step: This represents covenants so I will briefly talk about how as we keep our covenants we are blessed. I am going to grab a Sacrament cup for this one and remind them that as we take the sacrament we remember the covenants we have made.
Peace in Christ: This represents the blessing of having Christ in our lives. When we look to Him, He brings us peace and comfort no matter what storms of life are thrown at us. I am bringing in a mini Christus for this one.
Search, Ponder, and Pray: This one represents scriptures. I am bringing in
a copy of the Book of Mormon for this one. I will tell them that it is a treasure
to me because I am a convert and didn't always have it in my life.
If I Listen With My Heart: This one represents prophets and specifically taking time to listen to their words and apply them to our lives. I am brining a little book of mormon prophet figurine for this one.
I'm Trying to Be Like Jesus: This one represents love and the ability to give and recieve love from others. I have a stuffed heart I am bringning in for this one.
Come Follow Me Mashup: This one represents the ability to come to earth and learn to have faith to follow Christ. For this one I am bringing a shoe to remind them each step we take can be a step towards Christ.
The Miracle: This one represents the ability to be healed by the power of the priesthood. For this one I am bringing an oil vial.
I also thought it might be fun to add movement, so I wrote down some ideas in case I wanted to add those. For Search, Ponder, and Pray, I plan to use the ryhthm sticks. For I'm Trying to Be Like Jesus we will use egg shakers (you could also use paper plates). And for The Miracle, we will use straws. You can find all these ideas with video links under the title of each song here on my blog. I am looking forward to encouraging them to focus on spiritual treasures this week more than the treasures of this world. Oh! And I am letting them all take home a chocolate coin as a treasure too! I brought taffy for the kids who are gluten free as well.
Shadow Box for "Ye are the Light of the World"
This week the come follow me lesson is on being the light of the world. It references this scripture "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Matthew 5:14-16. As I read this scripture, I had an idea to turn the song "If the Savior Stood Beside Me" into a shadow box singing time. I love how it turned out. You can see the example below with instructions on how to make it as well:
I will add that I forgot to mention that the image with the Savior and little girl looking at her near the end, I did take a sharpie to outline it a bit more so it would stand out. But it didn't take me too long. I created a free printable so you can print the images out to make your own. In the video, I mention that all the completely black images I printed on cardstock to make them more durable. The black and white images were printed on normal paper so the light would shine through better. Here is the document in case you want to do this activity as well:
I did type out each part of the song under the image it goes with to make sure it made sense. As I cut them out, I pulled out the document and numbered the images on the back so that I can just put them back in order easily. I hope you enjoy this fun activity! I can't wait to share it with my primary tomorrow.
I also created a printable with an image of Jesus Christ and the scripture too. You can access that one here:
The Books in the New Testament Scroll
I wanted to come up with a fun but simple way to sing through "The Books in the New Testament" song with the kids as they come into primary each week. I often will sing other primary songs that we may be learning that month or that go along with the CFM lessons. So my husband helped me create a scroll with the books of the New Testament so I can unroll it as we sing. The kids loved it (especially the oldest class in Senior Primary). I made a quick video so you can see how to make it and how it works. Check it out here:
John the Baptist is Born
I have been trying to sing songs based on the lessons in primary each week. So I like to interject scriptures they may be learning with pictures and tie them to the songs. The week we learned about John the Baptist being born, I found a fun picture of his parents and him and asked the kids who they saw in the picture and if the people looked old or young. Then we read the scripture and sang "The Miracle" as we talked about miracles that surrounded the birth of John and Jesus. It was great! We also sang "Search, Ponder, and Pray" as we talked about the importance of them studying scriptures individually and with their families each day. I shared a great quote about receiving revelation too. You can check out both images here:
That's all I have for now, but I will keep adding them as more ideas come to me!
