Last year, I discovered this super fun Apostle Song. It is based on the apostles that were called in 2018 and sung to the tune of "The Hillbilly's." My awesome pianist adjusted the music a touch to fit the words better too. In this post, I have a fun flip chart I made, the music for the song, some fun pictures of the prophet and apostles as they are now and as children, and a video to help you sing along.
Flip Chart
Here is the flip chart for this song. For this song, I ended up taking pictures of the prophet and apostles, and then added the image of their accomplishment/job next to it. Some of the apostles it proved a harder task than others, so I just did my best. I thought it would be fun for the kids to see them as they are now and a few years ago too. As a tip, if you are viewing this from your phone, click the three dots in the upper left hand corner and select "print layout" for easier viewing. You can access the flip chart here:
Since I created this flip chart, Elder Ballard passed away. So here is the new updated version with Elder Patrick Kearon:
Music and Actions
I found the idea for this song on the Primary Chorister Facebook Page....I think. It has been several months since I sang this song, so I may have found it somewhere else. Anyway, my amazing pianist ran the song through her composition program to help make the words fit the notes a little better. So this file has the hand motions and the music for you too.
For the 2024 Music you would want to use this version with the correct words:
Hand Motions
I decided to create a video of the hand motions for this song so you can hear the song and practice it at home. It made it much easier for me to feel confident singing it in front of Primary. Hopefully it helps you too. I first did this for last October Conference of 2021 and I wasn't quite sure if the kids would like it or not, but they loved it so much that one kid shouted out "This is so much fun!" I love any opportunity to encourage them to get excited about General Conference, so I was excited that they enjoyed it so much. I think I will plan to do it just about every conference for fun. I don't spend the whole time on this song, just the last 5 minutes of class or so. Hopefully your primary enjoys it as well!
For the 2024 new version of the song you would want to do these hand motions:
Russell M. Nelson helped hearts to best (thump chest)
Dallin H. Oaks in a judge's seat (pound fist like a gravel)
Henry B. Eyring has a lot of degrees (Tap pointer finger on temples of head)
And that makes up the 1st Presidency (wave hand in front and hold up number 1 finger)
Jeffrey R. Holland went to Yale and the Y (Make a big Y with arms)
Dieter F. Uctdorf loves to fly, (Pretend to fly with airplane arms)
David A. Bednar in a president's seat (Squat like sitting in a chair)
And Quentin L. Cook was a high school athlete (Dribble and shoot a pretend basketball)
D. Todd Christofferson was in the army (salute)
Neil L. Andersen worked on a dairy (pretend to milk a cow)
Ronald A. Rasband served in New York City (pose like the statue of liberty)
And Gary E. Stevenson speaks Japanese (cup hands around mouth)
Dale G. Renlund replaced people's hearts (make heart with hands)
Gerrit W. Gong is great at painting art (making painting motion up & down on a flat hand)
Ulisses S. Soares worked in accounting (hold up 1-2-3 fingers)
And Patrick Kearon joined the church on Christmas Eve (ASL sign for baptize: use two "A" hands and move them down a bit as you turn them sideways)
Now you know the 12 and the 1st Presidency (wave hand in front of you and hold up number 1 finger)
Apostles as Children
Last year when I introduces this song, I just printed out pictures of the prophet and apostles as children and as they are now. I printed the pictures back to back and laminated them. Then I put up just their apostle pictures and we sang through the song once. Then I told them that the apostles didn't start out as apostles, but kids just like them and then they built thier testimonies and grew up and were called by God to serve the church. Then I flipped the pictures over so they could see the images of them as children and we sang the song again. It was so much fun. You really could do a lot with these pictures. You could have kids hold them up as you sing or play a matching game or whatever you want. Hopefully this file is useful for you as well! As a tip, if you are viewing this from your phone, click the three dots in the upper left hand corner and select "print layout" for easier viewing. Here is the file:
Okay, that is all I have on this song for now, but I will keep updating this post as more ideas come to me :)
How do I print out flip chart? I don’t have tv in Primary room.
